Set against the soft backdrop of Tochigi’s rural landscapes, ROOF HOUSE by Tamada & Wakimoto Architects reimagines how a home can engage with its environment. Rather than enclosing life within walls, this project opens it outward.

Sprawling under a single, elegant roof, multiple small structures are woven together with semi-outdoor “gardens” that breathe life between them. These spaces shift character—welcoming guests, hosting outdoor meals, or inviting children to play beneath the wide sky. At its heart, ROOF HOUSE is a living organism, flexible enough to evolve: should the owners move, parts can become shops or galleries, continuing to pulse with community life.
This is not just a house: it’s a gentle framework for connection, creativity, and coexistence with nature. Award-winning and deeply thoughtful, ROOF HOUSE invites a future where living extends beyond four walls.
