Japanese fashion house Issey Miyake has opened a striking new flagship store in Manhattan, marking a major new chapter for the brand in New York City. Located at 45 Madison Avenue inside the historic New York Life Building overlooking Madison Square Park, the two-level, 13,000-square-foot space was designed by New York architecture studio SO-IL.

The store carefully balances the grandeur of the building’s original Beaux-Arts architecture with Issey Miyake’s signature minimalist aesthetic. Exposed historic details sit alongside sleek aluminum and stainless-steel fixtures, while a monumental transparent glass staircase anchors the interior. Expansive windows flood the space with natural light, creating an atmosphere that feels both serene and deeply connected to the city outside.

The new flagship also pays tribute to the brand’s long history in New York. After more than two decades in Tribeca, Issey Miyake closed its Frank Gehry-designed flagship in late 2025. Elements from that iconic store have been incorporated into the new location, including reworked glass wall panels transformed into display tables and a titanium panel honoring the friendship between Gehry and Issey Miyake.

But what really makes this new location unique is the introduction of MADO, the brand’s first gallery space outside Japan. Located at the rear of the store, the space will host rotating exhibitions and special projects, reinforcing Issey Miyake’s ongoing commitment to art, design, and experimentation beyond fashion.
