Tokyo-based artist Haneno Suzuki has a way of turning something everyday as paper into something completely unexpected in her solo exhibition “Playful Lines“, currently on view at (Place) by Method in Shibuya. Running from July 4th to 19th, 2025, the show invites visitors to explore a surprising world where paper becomes architectural and organic at once. The gallery is located just a short walk from Shibuya or Omotesando station, open from noon to 7pm, and closed on July 6 and 13.

Suzuki’s work combines the sharp clarity of graphic design with the warmth and texture of textiles. The process begins with carefully hand-cut paper, which are layered to form “playful” lines. The layered lines, which at once feel both structured and fluid, are then woven together in a process that transforms two-dimensional paper into three-dimensional forms. Some pieces call to mind baskets or nets, while others resemble woven cloth, yet they always maintain the lightness and crispness that only paper can offer. Over the years, Suzuki has exhibited in cities like Tokyo, Seoul, Los Angeles, and across Europe, steadily building a reputation for her thoughtful blend of craft and design.

Many are available for purchase through the gallery shop, but even just seeing them in person is a treat. The wall-hung pieces in particular invite you to step closer and notice all the subtle shifts in tone, texture, and layering. Spend a few minutes among her works and you might find yourself drawn into the gentle rhythm of their patterns, the unexpected harmony of their colors.
