Senko hanabi, literally meaning ‘incense fireworks,’ are small and subtle sparklers that are packed with about 10 seconds of delicate pyrotechnics. Typically sold alongside other handheld fireworks, the unspoken rule is that senko hanabi are reserved for the grand finale. However, their ethereal and subtle nature always leave us wanting more.

Tenohira Hanabi, which literally means ‘sparkler in your palm,’ is a new way to enjoy these fireworks. Designed in collaboration with an Aichi-based fireworks manufacturer, Tenohira Hanabi is a glass jar that fits snug in the palms of your hands. The jar has dimples on both sides, which hold a T-shaped sparkler that dangles inside the jar, allowing you to observe the sparkles up-close. It also prevents any winds from prematurely extinguishing the flame, ensuring the senko hanabi lasts as long as it can.

Tenohira Hanabi was created by designer Kenji Fujii of creative agency Taki Corporation. Unfortunately, the firm exited their product design business in 2023, which means this and their other products are no longer available. But that doesn’t keep us from appreciating the lovely concept!
