Wasara, our favorite brand of sustainable and compostable tableware, is launching a new brand called Casanet. A riff on the Japanese word for stacking (kasaneru), the new brand features the same elegance, minimalism and eco-friendliness, but applied to transportable food containers with lids.

Despite having felt extremely old after searching our archives to find when we first wrote about Wasara (hint: Obama had just become President), we’re still excited about this new brand. It’s made from the same material as Wasara—bamboo and sugarcane fibers—but come with lids, allowing whatever is packed inside to be easily stacked and transported. And the best part is that, just like Wasara, the special blend of materials makes these containers biodegrade in just 90 days.
And while these types of compostable containers have become fairly common, the lids are often plastic so in our view, these are a welcome addition to what feels like a crowded market. They were designed by Fumie Shibata, one of Japan’s most-notable industrial designers.
There’s a launch event going on right now at The Conran Shop in Daikanyama through December 1, 2024. We expect Casanet to go on sale online shortly after.
