FamilyMart’s in-house apparel label Convenience Wear is stepping into the world of sumo with a new limited-edition collaboration celebrating legendary yokozuna Chiyonofuji.

Developed in collaboration with fashion designer Hiromasa Ochiai, Convenience Wear is known for its philosophy of “Good Materials, Good Craftsmanship, Good Design.” For this collection, that approach meets the dynamism and tradition of sumo, Japan’s national sport.

The collaboration features two simple but distinctive items: line socks inspired by the shimenawa ropes associated with sumo, and a hand towel depicting an iconic moment from Chiyonofuji’s career. Both are finished with bold Japanese calligraphy that gives the everyday accessories a distinctly Japanese character.

The hand towel is particularly noteworthy for its craftsmanship. Chiyonofuji’s likeness is rendered in jacquard using the techniques of Imabari towel artisans, a detail that Ochiai says brought back memories of watching the legendary wrestler on television.

“Seeing Chiyonofuji’s image recreated in jacquard using the craftsmanship of Imabari towel artisans brought back exactly what I remember watching on television at the time,” Ochiai says. “Through this collaboration, I hope we can create an opportunity for people both in Japan and abroad to discover and appreciate Japanese culture.”

The socks come in two colors and retail for ¥600, while the hand towel is priced at ¥800. The collection will be available through FamilyMart’s online portal starting from 10 a.m. on August 25, with a nationwide rollout beginning August 28.
